FAQ

Before you ask

Straight answers about what IndieDex is, what is free, and how discovery works.

Before you ask

Do I need an account for recommendations per list?
You get recommendations per list, but you need to be signed up to have lists. Search works with no account. An account is free and is where your lists, backlog, and ratings live so each shelf can recommend on its own.
Is everything free?
Almost everything is free: search, lists, backlog, ratings, and sharing. Taste profiles and taste twins are Supporter-only. Those two sit behind the membership because they involve infrastructure costs per user, and the membership is also how you help keep the lights on if you want to. The paywalled extras sweeten that deal; they are not how games get ranked. Search stays free, with no ads and no pay-to-rank.
Which games are in the catalog?
We currently only list Steam games that are already released. Unreleased titles and a lot of abandoned games are not in the catalog. That keeps discovery pointed at games you can actually buy and play today.
Will search keep getting better?
Yes. The search is always being improved: better routing, sharper ranking, and cleaner catalog data as we learn which queries players actually ask.
How is this different from Steam search?
Steam search is a storefront: it matches tags and sells what already sells. IndieDex reads the sentence you typed and ranks small studios as a feature, not an accident.
Only indie games?
The whole Steam catalog is in there. Studio size is a ranking signal, never a filter, so a big game shows up when it is the right answer, and stops crowding out the ones that aren't.
